More About Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh
Sunflower painting by van Gogh is not just a painting, it is a representation of life cycle. If one happens to see the painting closely, one can clearly see that there are exactly 15 sunflowers, each representing a different stage of life.
The color palatte is limited to shades of green with a bits of yellow. With such a limited array of colors, painting something like Sunflowers is challenging. Vincent van Gogh did justice to the palatte and the feelings that painting wanted to convey.
Most us who aren’t inclined towards this beautiful artist, wouldn’t know that this painting was made to impress his then ideal Paul Gauguin. Of course, later their relationship had turned into a roller-coaster which led to the infamous ear-chopping incident of Van Gogh. Keeping that aside, the painting remains one of the most favorite to van Gogh.
Van Gogh personally never liked sunflowers until Paul Gauguin started calling in a resemblance of sunflowers.
Sunflowers, all in all, is a series of 11 paintings out of which a few very exchanged with his beloved Gauguin.
The painting metaphorically reminds us of the human mortality while the seed within the flower pulls shows you the cycle of life on earth.
In fact, that is not it. On a deeper level, van Gogh’s Sunflower painting was a depiction of his love and gratitude toward his then-partner, Gauguin. He created a painting which was an amalgamation of Sunflowers and Woman rocking the cradle. It was supposed to be a triptych with two sunflowers on both the sides to enhance the painting all in all.
So much so that Gauguin’s room was filled with sunflower paintings by Van Gogh.
What is even interesting is the fact that sunflowers hold more symbolism than roses in Paris, even today.
Lovers exchange this flower as a token of affection. The bright yellow color happens to remind them of the warmth of their partner.
