The mastermind behind The Birth of Venus, unlike many other artists, Bouguereau was not born into an artist family.
He was born into a Roman Catholic family, where his father was a wine and olive oil trader.
His mother, however, came from a middle class Calvinist family.
Therefore he did not receive proper religious education and his childhood was rather restrictive.
In fact, he was initially encouraged to choose Priesthood as his career, and was even sent to stay with a Catholic priest when he was 12.
