More About Edvard Munch’s The Scream Painting
Regarded as one of the most talked about paintings in the world, The Scream by Edvard Munch depicts the sorrow of the nature and Human in proto-expressionist style.
The Scream painting currently sits in the National Gallery and Munch Museum, Oslo, Norway. It’s not less than a heritage for the Norwegian people.
The composition of this artwork comprises of 4 coloring mediums. Munch has incorporated oil, pastel, tempera and pastels in crafting The Scream.
Named as one of the most iconic painting of all time, it has received numerous recognitions across the globe.
The central theme of the painting portrays “Anxiety of The Human Mind”. The painter has expressed this emotion with a very deep and intense message along with it.
Edvard Munch was walking through the mountains of Oslo as he witnessed some nacreous clouds covering the sky. It was an evening and the sun was about to set.
As he kept on gazing towards the sky, he witnessed a blood red sunlight. He further quoted that “I heard a scream passing through the nature”.
The fjord through which Munch was staring the sky was identified later. It was a mountain pass overlooking the city of Oslo.
This became his inspiration to create the masterpiece. He painted plenty of layers with different colors and pigments to depict the nacreous clouds in their best form.
Munch painted this painting in two versions. One with pastel predominantly and other in a lithograph.
While drafting this artwork, the artist was looking for an inspiration in order to visualize the nacreous color scheme. However, a volcanic eruption from Krakatoa stayed in his cognitive memory.
He took references from that incident and embedded some tints of red in the composition to make it more expressive.
The Scream has been in the talks for a couple controversies as well. It got stolen twice; in 1994 and in 2004 from both the venues of Oslo.
