Munch painted this painting in two versions. One with pastel predominantly and other in a lithograph.

While drafting this artwork, the artist was looking for an inspiration in order to visualize the nacreous color scheme. However, a volcanic eruption from Krakatoa stayed in his cognitive memory.

He took references from that incident and embedded some tints of red in the composition to make it more expressive.

The Scream has been in the talks for a couple controversies as well. It got stolen twice; in 1994 and in 2004 from both the venues of Oslo.
