More About Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition VII
One of the most alluring paintings of all time, Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky is an epitome of expressionism. It comprises of numerous elements that portray abstract evocatively.
When Kandinsky thought of creating a masterpiece like this, he knew the amount of time and work it would consume. The initial preparations of this painting had nearly 30 drafts of watercolor.
The finishing of this painting took Kandinsky about 4 days to complete. He has layered this art work with a tremendous effort.
At a glance, it looks like an explosion of colors on the canvas. However, peculiar composition of this painting gave birth to a cosmos of colors.
This painting represents multiple themes such as a catastrophic flood, a placid mind amidst a chaos and other related perspectives.
Kandinsky managed to signify the expression of non-material thoughts through this painting. His choice of color scheme tells us about his motive behind putting them in the painting.
The central theme can be deduced from his earlier creations of the same series. Paintings like Composition V and Composition VI also portray an apocalyptic theme.
Kandinsky’s assistant Gabriel Munter was the only one to witness the birth of this Maven. She photographed this painting on 25 November 1913, the day Kandinsky started the final draft.
Kandinsky accomplished this painting on 29 November 1913.
This painting is rare post-impression art with a biblical theme. The central apocalyptic theme is said to be inspired by Noah’s Ark during the massive flood in The Bible.
Kandinsky has used Motifs very frequently in order to embrace the uncertain and undefined nature of the flood.
Some elements in this painting appear to be mythical as well. With a few strokes of yellow and blue towards the bottom left of the canvas, a mythical creature seems to be approaching the whirlpool in the center of the composition.
A few undefined elements in the painting are outlined using black color. Kandinsky did this on purpose in order to outline the materialistic elements in the painting.
Although, the materialistic are not identifiable to the layman, they are drafted with a philosophical and spiritual perspective.
